Garkuchnia

inn, tavern; a place where meals were served, usually of a low standard and intended for poor folk. In private towns, the owner needed permission to open a garkuchnia. They were usually located in poor neighbourhoods and along travel routes.

Source: “It is difficult to forbid Kurczewski, the inn owner, to have a rented place for his tavern, it is even more difficult, though, to make him rent the place shown by you, My Lordship. Should he keep the inn not in the principal place, but at the backyard, nobody’s loss, so may it be his way, no forcing him there.” AGAD, collection of A. Ksawerowa Branicka née Potocka, ref. no. 317, p. 19, Izabela Branicka née Poniatowska to Patyński, in Jordanowicze, July 17, 1774 r.
