Perkal
(fr. percale) – percale; a type of smooth, strong cotton fabric with a tight plain weave and round thread (cotton cloth, “Egyptian” cloth). Originally, percale was imported from India and later manufactured in Europe, mainly in France. Percale was usually white, but in the 18th century its coloured and printed versions (perkaliki) appeared.
