(pieprz jamajski, pieprz pachnący, piment) – allspice, also known as Jamaican pepper, myrtle pepper, or pimento; a popular condiment used at noble courts. Berries of Pimenta dioica, tropical evergreen tree native to Mexico, Central America, and Jamaica. In these regions it was as popular as vanilla and used as an addition to chocolate. Allspice appeared in Europe in the 16th century, and in the late 17th century it gained widespread popularity. Noble and magnate courts ordered vast amounts of allspice. It was used in food and selected remedies.
